The role of mesophotic reefs in coral ecosystems
Slattery M, Lesser MP, Rocha LA, Spalding HL, Smith TB
What are the roles of deep reefs in the broader context of coral reef community ecology and resilience in the face of anthropogenic changes? This new review discusses this question and brings together the modern evidence for what mesophotic reefs are among tropical marine communities globally.

Depth and structure as environmental drivers of fish communities across a shallow to mesophotic gradient in the northern US Virgin Islands
Heidmann SL, Brandtneris VW, Ennis RS, Blondeau J, Grove LJW, Smith TB
An unprecedented look at seascape scale patterns of coral reef fish communities across a depth gradient of 0-50 m (0-165’). This research used data from TCRMP, the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program, and the Deep Coral Reef Monitoring Program to look at patterns of reef fish diversity and abundance in the northern USVI at over 1,000 sampling sites. Analysis of trophic groups showed that density of all groups were positively associated with relief, but while herbivores decreased with depth, planktivores increased, and piscivores and invertivores showed interactions. Commercially important species tended to occur more frequently and in larger sizes on deeper reefs, suggesting that mesophotic reefs shelter more fisheries resources, although they are less commonly sampled in visual census programs.
